Sewing, Textiles & Art Classes for Children

These classes are designed for children who have a special passion for the creative arts, and have a desire to explore this amazing world. Through the mysteries of materials and letting the child’s imagination free, they can create a variety of inspirational art and sewing projects.

Sewing Class

Machine Sewing Lessons

In our machine sewing lessons at Quirky Birds, children learn how to safely and confidently use a sewing machine while bringing their creative ideas to life. They are taught essential machine skills such as threading, controlling speed, stitching accurately, and understanding basic construction techniques. As they progress, children also learn how to read, understand, and follow commercial sewing patterns, including interpreting pattern pieces, markings, and instructions. Lessons focus on building independence, planning projects, and learning how different fabrics and stitches work together — all while creating practical and exciting items they can be proud to use and share.

Hand Sewing Lessons

In our hand sewing lessons at Quirky Birds, children learn the foundations of sewing in a calm, creative, and hands-on way. They are introduced to essential skills such as threading a needle, tying knots, basic stitches, and following simple patterns. Through carefully chosen projects, children develop fine motor skills, patience, concentration, and confidence in their abilities. Hand sewing also encourages creativity and problem-solving, giving children a strong understanding of how things are made while fostering a sense of pride in creating something entirely by hand.

Knitting, Crochet & Needle Felting

As part of our sewing lesson sessions at Quirky Birds, children are also introduced to the creative textile arts of knitting, crochet, and needle felting. Through guided, age-appropriate projects, they learn basic techniques such as casting on, simple stitches, working with hooks and needles, and shaping wool through felting. These skills support hand strength, coordination, focus, and creativity, while allowing children to explore different textures and ways of making. Learning these traditional crafts encourages patience, imagination, and a deeper appreciation for handmade work — all in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Art/Craft

Mixed Media Art & Craft Classes (Ages 6–11)

Our mixed media art and craft classes at Quirky Birds give children aged 6–11 the opportunity to explore, experiment, and create using a wide range of materials and techniques. Children learn to combine drawing, painting, collage, textiles, sculpture, and recycled materials to make unique artworks while developing skills such as colour mixing, composition, texture, and design. Projects are open-ended and process-focused, encouraging curiosity, imagination, and individual expression.

Art-making plays an important role in children’s development. Through creative exploration, children build confidence, fine motor skills, problem-solving abilities, and emotional expression. Working with their hands supports focus, resilience, and patience, while a relaxed, supportive environment helps children feel safe to take creative risks and develop their own ideas. Most importantly, our classes nurture a love of creativity and give children the freedom to enjoy making, experimenting, and being proudly themselves.
